Lyrics
Welcome
Welcome Welcome,
welcome every guest, welcome to our music fest.
Music is our only cheer, fills both soul and ravaged ear.
Sacred muse teach us the word, sweetest note to be explored.
Softly fills the trembling air, to complete our music fair/fare?
It was just a dream
It was just a dream, spinning out, across the morning
Whispering, through the trees, beginnings of the day
Where I walked with you, and you held my hand
And oh, my love, when new love was ours.
It was just a dream, just a light, within my darkness
A day that took, the fairest hour, that sparkles on the dew of morn
We lingered there, our hearts to share
And oh, to know, what peace was our love.
It was just a dream, a dream so young, but never foolish
A touch of gold, the edge of spring, when summer promises unfold
The enchanted hour, that became our lives
And oh, so still, like water so deep.
It was just a dream, we never fell, we never stumbled
No seasoned lies, to swift despise, no sadness clinging to a smile
No heart alone, no sad way home
And oh, love no, no touch turned so cold.
It was just a dream, a dream that's lost, a silent memory
Now it seems, so long ago, so many tears so many sighs
But I hear your voice, still calling me
And oh, I know, our love is still right.
The Farrier
I was a farrier's boy and kept the fires burning
From the time I left my home, the trade I was a-learning
The fires glow, so hot below
I kept the bellows turning
And it was my task, in the noise and dark
To keep the farrier working
Hands of iron and arms of steel
Boots of heavy brown leather.
The farrier shoes, the heaviest horse
Fit for every weather
At first I made the shoes, for dray-horse and for vanner
In time fine shoes I made, for horses of the manor
A bar of steel ta'en from the fire
And on the anvil pounded
I turned into, a finer shoe
Than ever would be founded
Chorus
I hold the horses firm and let them know who's master
The more they quietly stand, the more I can work faster
With nippers I remove old shoes
And cut the foot back ready
Oh I know the smell when a shoe fits well
And burns itself a bedding
Chorus
The lasses they come round to watch the sparks a-flying
So gently they enquire while the farrier's boy they're eyeing
I tells em all to stand aside
And hits the anvil heavy
Oh it's plain to see there'll pleasure be
For the farrier's boy that's ready
Rival
Some Rival has
stolen my true love away
So I in old England no longer can stay
I will swim, the wide ocean around my fair breast
To find out my true love, the one I love best
And when I have found out my joy and delight
I will welcome him kindly by day and by night
For the bells shall be a-ringing and the drums make a noise
For to welcome my true love with ten thousand joys
Here's a health to all lovers that are loyal and just
Here's confusion to the Rival that lives in distrust
For I'll be as constant as a true debt of love
And it's never will I prove false to my love
The Message
Love has never conquered me or turned my soul to tears
Love has never found me, even after all these years
For the message that I gave my love it surely took my heart
Oh how many words were better left unsaid
In the fields are where we both belong
I know my love so well
We walked on lowland pastures
And oh I knew him well
And the fields were where we lived our lives
We sow, we tend, we reap
I watched a life so dear to me
That time had never time to keep
A messenger he came to me and told me it was time
All the parish farmhands, all men young and in their prime
Were taking arms today at noon against the band of thieves
They want my John to lead them in the fight
Each spring it brought us our delight
The new leaves growing clean
Each morning filled with promise as
Our fields they turned to green
And the peace of quiet summer days
In sunshine and in shade
In all we were delighted
With love of all we made
I took the message to my John, though great it was my fear
He stopped and then he kissed me and brushed away my tear
He wanted to be counted, to be the best of men
But a hero brings no comfort to my days
A dream so quickly turns to dust
And leaves behind no shell
I breathe but oh I sorrow
My pain I cannot tell
One life is bitterly exchanged
For peace in other lives
One death it lays like winter
On me, for I survived
Love has never conquered me or turned my soul to tears
Love has never found me, even after all these years
For the message that I gave my love it surely took my heart
Oh how many words were better left unsaid
All along the
greenwood
All along the greenwood,
The harebells are ringing,
The lark is a-singing,
That summer is here.
By field and bu meadow,
By bank and by hedgerow,
The wild dove is calling,
That summer is here.
The robin flies,
The gleam of winter in his eye,
Those frosty days,
He did brighten with his smile.
A friend who brings, who taketh naught away
Ne'er wants for company
Ne'er wants for joy.
Chorus
The owl she flies,
On silent wings she floats upon the night
And so our fears do fly,
In dark alone they roam the restless night.
But darkest hours, tears with our sorrows made,
They with our fears do fade,
When comes the light.
Chorus
The raven flies,
Somewhere a warm soul finds that last goodnight,
We fix the ground,
We fear our name may suddenly be sung.
Whene're that day, we know her pinioned wings.
Will fold us to her breast,
Too soon.
Chorus
Jenny at the
mill
Jenny at the mill been
Working in the moonlight
Visiting her lover with his warp and weave;
Standing by the street door
Waiting at the corner
Waiting for the signal that it's safe to leave.
Long dark nights and a corner to be hiding
That's what a lover is wanting for
Warmth and shelter the devil would melt for...
A silver snuff spoon full of a lover's sweet kiss.
When the night is warm she's
Leaning by the mill door
Never mind the shuttle going warp and weave
Out across the tops then
Down the ragged lane then
making for the shadow of an old stone wall.
Chorus
Jenny had a sister
Who never could resist a
Man who held her hand in the pale moonlight
Lucky that she's handsome
Caught herself a good one
Now she is a lady with a carriage so bright.
Chorus
Jenny is a good girl
Never said she would girl
Only if she wanted and the time was right
Tells her Billy so and
Says she'll have to go if
He cannot provide her with a carriage so bright.
Chorus
When the night is cold and
Frost is on the windows
Jenny stays inside by the warming fire
Billy takes her hand and
Tells her that he's found her
A better place to shelter from the cold night air.
Chorus
All my Trials
Hush little baby don't you cry,
you know your Mama was born to die
All my trials, Lord, soon be over
I had a little book was given to me,
and every page spelt liberty
All
my trials, Lord, soon be over
If religion were a thing that money could buy,
then the rich would live and the poor would die
All
my trials, Lord, soon be over
Too late my brothers, too late, but never mind
All
my trials, Lord, soon be over
There is a tree in Paradise,
the pilgrims call it the tree of life
All my trials, Lord, soon be over
All
my trials, Lord, soon be over
Soft Rain
There was a soft rain falling
As I stood by the door
And the light was fading
I could scarce see the gate upon the moor
I heard the guns
And then out of the night
Came soldiers
The army of the man I once called king
They said "Now where is she hiding,
You know she must return
And we have seen her riding
Though we lost her track across the burn"
I said no word
They would have known I lied
To men I knew
From the army of the man I once called king
There was a cold, cold silence
As I stood by the door
Then with steel and powder
They turned to the gate upon the moor
I closed my eyes
They should have fired
Or betrayed me
To the army of the man I once called king
There was a soft rain falling
They rode in to the night
And I could hear them calling
When from shadow, she walked into the light
The fairest maid
In the softest rain
We walked away
From the army of the man I once called king
Blacksmith
A Blacksmith courted me nine months and better
He fairly won my heart, wrote me a letter
With his hammer in his hand he looked so clever
And if I were with my love, I would live for ever
Where is my love gone with his cheeks like roses
He's gone across the sea gathering primroses
I'm afraid the shining sun might burn and scorch his beauty
And if I were with my love, I would do my duty
Strange news is come to town, strange news is carried
Strange news flies up and down that my love is married Oh I wish them both
much joy, though they won't hear me
And if I were with my love, I would do my duty
Oh what did you promise me when you lay beside me
You said you'd marry me and not deny me
If I said I'd marry you, t'was only for to try you
So bring your witness love, and I'll not deny you
Oh witness have I none, save God Almighty
And may he reward you well for the slighting of me
Her lips grew pale and wan, it made her poor heart tremble
To think she had loved him, and he proved deceitful
The King
Joy, health love and peace, be all here in this place
By your leave we will sing concerning our King.
Our King is well dressed in silks of the best
In ribbons so rare no King can compare
We have travelled many miles over hedges and stiles
In search of our King unto you we bring
We have powder and shot to conquer the lot
We have cannon and ball to conquer them all
Old Christmas is past twelve tide is the last
And we bid you adieu, great joy to the new
Victoria Station 1 p.m.
They talked, and I thought they were alright
Didn't see the people round them and didn't seem to fight
Then as he leant, to kiss her lips
She turned her head aside, and oh, I could have cried
Love denied, leaves someone crying inside
Why cause such pain, for such small gain?
In sadness then I turned aside
No words of consolation could heal his pain inside
She walked away and he, confused
Waved helpless to his lover, whose love he'd been refused
No where to turn, no-one to take his gentle hand
Or soothe his tears, or understand.
And she, who scorned upon his dust
Killed his dreams so lightly and shattered all the trust
Who thinks herself so much a prize
She may give pain to those whose failings bring less than her desires
A bitter heart, a life of mean and cankered lies
A sense of self, that we despise.
She wasn't you, she wasn't me
But it could easily be
When you feel your rage put ice around your heart
Remember her
And let your heart go free.
The Angel Gabriel
The Angel Gabriel form heaven came,
His wings as drifted snow his eyes as flame;
"All Hail" said he, "thou lowly maiden Mary,
Most highly favoured lady,"
Gloria!
"For know a blessed mother thou shalt be,
All generations laud and honour thee,
Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold
Most highly favoured lady,"
Gloria!
Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head
"To me be as it pleaseth God," she said,
"My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name."
Most highly favoured lady,
Gloria!
Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born
In Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn,
And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say,
Most highly favoured lady,
Gloria!
Cadgwith Anthem
Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry
For to rob bags of plunder it is our intent
As we roam through the valleys/ies
Where the lilies and the roses
And the beauty of Kashmir lay drooping his head
Then away, then away, then away
To the caves in yonder mountains
Where the robbers retreat
Hush, hush in the distance there's footsteps approaching
Stand, stand and deliver it is our watch cry
Chorus
Stand, stand and deliver your gold and your silver
Then us bold young robbers no more will be seen
Chorus
Then we must away to our wives and our children
Expecting their fathers come robbing this way
Chorus
Wild Mountain Thyme
Oh the Summer time is coming, and the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie go?
And we'll all go together, to pull wild mountain thyme
all around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie go?
I will build my love a tower, near yon pure crystal fountain
And on it I will build? all the flowers of the mountain
Chorus
If my true love she were gone, I would never find another
Where wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather
Chorus
Oh the Summer time is coming, and the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather
Roads to freedom
I have walked in the hills, across mountain and moorland
Where the road runs as far as your eyes can still see
Where the wind and the rain know you can take no shelter
And long are the days, as long are the ways
These are the roads I have travelled for freedom
These are the roads that have brought me to here
There's no turning back, and no crying for changes
To roads that have brought me to here
I have been to the Isles and I've walked on the beaches
My feet in the sand, and the spray in my hair
And nothing to hear but the sea and the seagulls
Nothing to see through the tears in my eyes
Chorus
I have been down the pits, in the dust and the darkness
Felled trees in the forests three hundred feet tall
I've climbed to the tops of a three-masted schooner
Changed sails in a tempest in all seven seas
Chorus
I've known many lovers and lived with their comfort
Though cold is the woman who's sure of her man
Though I still miss the love that I once held so tightly
And I've wandered alone, in the dark and the cold
Chorus
Some roads have been lonely, with no friend to guide me,
And some, I have wondered how long they could be,
If I turn and look back I can see where I stumbled
Where I tried to remember, to my own self be true.
Chorus
